Reactivation & Winback
Reactivation (or winback) targets users who went dormant or fully churned, trying to bring them back to active use or a renewed subscription.
Reactivation campaigns generally cost less than acquiring an entirely new customer, since dormant users already have brand familiarity and, often, existing account data or payment methods that lower the friction to return. The tactic works best when there's a clear, specific reason to reach back out — a genuinely new feature that addresses the reason they left, a price change, or a seasonal relevance moment — rather than a generic "we miss you" message with no real hook.
Segmenting *why* users churned (price, missing feature, poor onboarding, a bad experience) before building a winback campaign matters — a single generic winback flow sent to everyone tends to underperform one tailored to the most common churn reasons.
