CDP & DMP
Customer Data Platform, Data Management PlatformMartech
A CDP unifies known, identified customer data (from a CRM, app, website, and other first-party sources) into a single profile per person; a DMP primarily manages anonymous, cookie-based audience segments for ad targeting.
The CDP-vs-DMP distinction has become more important, not less, as third-party cookies decline — DMPs were built around cookie-based, largely anonymous audience data, which is exactly the data type disappearing. CDPs, built around first-party, identified data (email, logged-in user IDs, CRM records), are far more resilient to that shift, which is why CDP adoption accelerated industry-wide through the privacy changes of the early 2020s.
