GEO
Generative Engine OptimizationGEO is the practice of optimizing content to be cited or summarized by AI-generated answers (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity) rather than just ranked in traditional blue-link search results.
A useful, slightly contrarian read on GEO: most of what makes content GEO-friendly is what's already made content good SEO for years — clear, direct answers near the top, well-structured headings, original data and examples, genuine expertise, and technical crawlability so the content can be accessed at all. The new part isn't the fundamentals; it's the surface (AI answer engines instead of a ten-blue-link results page) and a few genuinely new mechanics: AI systems appear to favor content that states claims plainly and cite-ably, and being included in an AI-generated summary doesn't require ranking #1 the way traditional SERP visibility does.
GEO is hard to measure with the same rigor as traditional SEO today, since referral tracking from AI chat interfaces is still immature compared to two decades of search-engine-referral tracking conventions — treat GEO tactics as directionally sound rather than backed by the same volume of hard measurement traditional SEO has.
No single standard definition
GEO is an emerging, fast-changing practice without settled measurement standards yet — treat specific tactical claims with more caution than well-established traditional SEO practices.
